Soundtrack of My Life: “Raising the Skate” by Speedy Ortiz
If you told me that Speedy Ortiz invented a time machine and traveled about 20 years into the future, I would believe it. Originally formed in 1991, they toiled in obscurity while similar-ish acts like Pavement and The Breeders received critical acclaim and more airplay on college radio. Two years later, fed up and hungry, someone in the band – probably not the drummer – invented a time machine with the intent of traveling to a not-so-distant future where their sound would stand out from the popular music of today.
Speedy Ortiz emerged in 2013 with an album already recorded, but they had trouble finding a cassette deck in which to play it. When the piercing guitars and pounding drums finally sounded, it ripped a hole in the space-time continuum.
OK, maybe not quite. But they’re awesome. Teenage me wanted this music, and I’m glad he’s getting it now.
