Soundtrack of My Life: “Hold Your Own” by The Herbert Bail Orchestra
For me, The Herbert Bail Orchestra’s songs will always be linked to my arrival in Los Angeles. A couple of months after moving here I saw them at the Echo Park Rising music festival. They were playing this tiny stage that felt like someone’s living room, and I loved them from the very first song.
The Herbert Bail Orchestra’s songs are intimate and epic, a swooning, boozy Americana gypsy kaleidoscope. These are tales of trouble and transformation, the greatest ideals packed into a dust-covered bindle slung over your shoulder as you ride the rails and find the answers yourself while humming along. After all, what is life if not a song?
And I got a cold sweat when she said, ‘No path is perfect.’
I was dead set, I said, ‘I won’t let her get away, I’m gonna hold on to my last breath.’
