Soundtrack of My Life: “Wicked Little Town” from Hedwig & the Angry Inch
We are talking to Phil Collins’ people. But then again, aren’t we all?”
When the movie version of “Hedwig & the Angry Inch” came out, they weren’t showing it in Baton Rouge. I had to drive an hour away to New Orleans to see it. I remember walking out of the theater confused, wondering if Hedwig and Tommy Gnosis were the same person. I wasn’t quite sure what I had just watched, but I wanted to see it again.
Anytime I ask myself, “Do I like this?” while watching a movie, listening to music, or looking at art, that usually is a prelude to me developing a strong love for it. Since that first viewing, I have seen two live “Hedwig” productions (far from Broadway), and I still watch the movie at least once a year. I even made foamboard wigs once like the fans in the movie and wore them to a live production in Austin. I have the soundtrack (both movie and Broadway versions), and I love the songs.
Aside from the comedy – and this movie is incredibly funny – what really got me hooked were the songs. I don’t typically like musicals, but the ones I like, I really love (hello, “Moulin Rouge”). The songs in “Hedwig” rock – they’re smart, pretty, funny, sweet, and at times they punch you right in the mouth, and instead of a bloody lip, you end up with red glitter lip gloss.
