Soundtrack of My Life: “Don’t Wake Me Up” by Lianne La Havas
Last December, I went to a concert in Pasadena for a choir my girlfriend was singing with, and Lianne La Havas came in and sat next to me. I’d been listening to her first record “Is Your Love Big Enough?” so much that I knew the words to almost every song. Her voice had been in my ears for hours upon hours. But when she was literally right next to me, I had no idea it was her.
After the show, my girlfriend introduced me and told Lianne I was a big fan of her music. Then I immediately went full fan-boy awkward, saying to her:
‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ is one of my favorite songs ever. Every time it ends, I’m sorry it’s over.”
Lianne was humble and gracious, saying she was surprised her music had reached these distant shores in California. And I was thankfully rescued by her slowly backing away and recusing herself from further conversation. The sentiment I expressed to her still holds true:
