Soundtrack of My Life: “So Beautiful” by Indran Amirthanayagam
When I was just starting college, “The United States of Poetry” aired on public television. Adding music behind the words of a wide range of poets, PBS produced real, MTV-style music videos for each. I have the VHS, CD, and hardcover book, and I know every track on that CD of poetry like any other of my favorite records. That series was incredibly influential on me and my continued love of poetry.
Out of all the poems I love from that release – Maggie Estep, Joseph Brodsky, Amiri Baraka, Paul Beatty, Rita Dove – the poem that really sang to me and sings to me still is “So Beautiful” by Indran Amirthanayagam:
